Times of India – Trained to perfection

The official dietician for 2008 for the Pantaloons Femina Miss India contest is alumna Nita Desai. Nita has prepared a complete diet plan for the girls who are committed to following it.

A Consultant Nutritionist and practitioner, Nita has built an enviable client list who have sought her expertise. Nita gained her Masters degree in Nutrition and Dietetics and her Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics from Leeds Met.

She has experience in working as a Senior Dietitian in various hospitals in the UK and has contributed chapters on nutrition in various books, besides having appeared on TV shows radio channels giving talks and tips on a healthy diet

The Press, York – Mapping out more contracts

Alumnus Roy Langstaff (Architectural Professional Studies, 1997) has joined the team at DWA Architects in York as a senior architect. Since qualifying from Leeds Metropolitan University in 1996, Mr Langstaff has worked in a wide variety of sectors including retail, industrial and defence.

He is one of six staff taken on in the wake of a boom in contracts to design care homes across the country, details of which are outlined in the article.  He will be looking after the day-to-day running of the design team, overseeing workload and client liaison and ensuring deadlines are met.

The Scotsman - An insider’s view on immigration law in Scotland

Damir Duheric, once an asylum seeker and refugee himself, is now advising businesses and private clients on how to deal with changes in the immigration law. Damir took a postgraduate diploma in law at Leeds Met having already completed a law degree in his native country. He has recently been appointed as a senior solicitor at Morton Fraser in Edinburgh.

Surrey Advertiser – Mould-breaking farm shop is a hit

Jon and Paula Briscoe met whilst studying Hospitality Management at Leeds Metropolitan University.

Their passion for the industry has driven their enterprising idea to combine a pub, restaurant and farm shop which has won the Countryside Alliance’s Rural Retailer award for the most innovative diversified business in the country. The Jolly Farmers Food Emporium in Betchworth is the second pub that Jon and Paula have turned around, after transforming the Lomac Bar and Dining Rooms in Ashtead. Both use fresh, seasonal produce sourced from local suppliers and farmers.

Buckingham palace has confirmed the engagement of Lady Rose Windsor to Leeds Met alumnus George Gilman. George is the son of former Leeds United director Peter Gilman, while Lady Rose’s father, the Duke of Gloucester, is 18th in line to the throne.

Congratulations to Leeds Met graduate Graham Lindsay who married fiancée Keiko Onishsi this month. The ceremony was held in sunny Singapore, where Graham now works as an IT executive for Barclays Capital.

It has been a successful year for Leeds Met alumna Susanna Bridge. Susanna has recently been named Head of the Event Committee for the Hotel Booking Agents Association (HBAA) and has now been appointed to the board of directors of Infotel Solutions, where she has worked for seven years.

"Susanna has made a significant contribution to the growth and development of our business" said Kimberley Graham, Director, Infotel Solutions Ltd.

Public Relations graduate Tony Harding experienced the future of job interviews this month. Inline with the growth of new media, Buffalo Communications asked interviewees to deliver a news broadcast, which was then uploaded on to YouTube, to “get behind the often emotionless CV.”

“It was pretty unnerving but I think it helped me show my different skills” said Tony, who was successfully appointed as junior account executive.

Telegraph Magazine - Block Party: Playful meets practical in the designs of Paul Johnson

From being obsessed with Lego, alumnus Paul Johnson has always loved putting things together. So it was a natural progression for him to take a BA in Three-dimensional Design at Leeds Met. From there he established his own company, Bloq.

He has a knack for construction and a taste for hard-edged shapes. His Russian Dolls storage system needs no screws or bolts and can therefore be easily dismantled. His work isn’t high-end design, but more practical and affordable.

Johnson is opening his first showroom in November, located in Putney, south-west London. Bloq will be exhibiting during Week Two of the Origin, the London Craft Fair, at Somerset House, 9th – 14th October.

Fermanagh Herald – Top appointments for Golf Resort

The prestigious Lough Erne Golf Resort Hotel has appointed top quality staff. Amongst the appointments is alumna Penny Thornbury who will be the Director of Sales and Marketing.

Penny graduated from Leeds Met with a BA in Hospitality Management and went on to do an MA in marketing. She has 15 years sales management experience with the Hastings Group, and was Director of Sales at the Hilton Belfast on its opening. She will be responsible for selling and marketing the resort to local, national and international clients in the corporate and leisure sectors.

Yorkshire Evening Post – Now record sailor Dee’s going the write way

Dee Caffari signed her book, Against the Flow, in Leeds today. The book charts her experience of sailing single-handed around the world the “wrong way”.  Dee then returned to her former university, Leeds Met, where she delivered a keynote speech at a staff conference.

She is now planning to become the first woman to sail non-stop around the world in both directions when she competes in the 2008/2009 Vendee Globe, supported by Leeds Met Carnegie. Experts from the university’s centre for performance sport are helping her with physiological, nutritional and psychological preparations.

Kent Life (Main) – Charlotte Harris, Artist

Charlotte trained at Leeds Metropolitan University, where she received a first class honours degree in Fine Art. She won the BP Portrait Award in 2003 with a painting of her grandmother. She was then commissioned to paint the portrait of Dame Vivien Duffield, which now hangs in the National Portrait gallery in London.

Yorkshire Evening Post - Help me go to Vietnam, says film maker

Leeds Metropolitan University alumnus Rob Brown attracted top actors for some of his previous award-winning short films. Rob, who graduated from the school of Film, Television and Performing Arts, is making a documentary about acclaimed war photographer Catherine Leroy, who died last year from lung cancer, but he needs to raise £5,000 to go to Vietnam to film an interview.

The Times Higher – PROFILE: PHILIP CROWTHER. “I got to 30 and was shattered. I thought, I will choose life.”

Philip Crowther used to be Executive Head of Sales at Blackpool Pleasure Beach and ran health clubs for the fitness company Esporta. He was working 70 or 80 hour weeks. That’s when, aged 30 he decided to have a career change.

He already had a degree in Recreation Management but took an MBA in Business Administration at Leeds Met. He lectured part-time at Leeds Met and enjoyed teaching so much he decided to make it his career. However he has not completely abandoned the commercial world and was involved in the International Indian Film Academy Awards in Yorkshire earlier this summer.

Yorkshire Evening Post – It’s a Family Affair! Degree of success for mum and daughter.

Mother, Julie Barham, and daughter, Aimee graduated on the same day from Leeds Metropolitan University this summer.

Julie had been teaching for 33 years and possessed the old Certificate of Education – she took the Masters degree in Education for her own satisfaction and fulfilment.

Aimee graduated with a BA in Physical Education and is working part-time as a teaching assistant whilst she decides whether to do the teaching certificate or apply for the police force.

Matt Crowther played rugby league for Sheffield Eagles, Huddersfield Giants and Hull FC before a series of leg injuries forced him to retire in 2003. Having always had ambitions of becoming a physiotherapist, Matt went on to study Physiotherapy at Leeds Metropolitan University and graduated with a BSc this year and is now working in Doncaster.

Medway Messenger – Building a Career in a Man’s World

Two million people work in the construction industry and of those, fewer than 190,000 are women. One of those women is Kerry Buston, alumna of Leeds Metropolitan University.

Once Kerry got her BSc Honours in Quantity Surveying, she worked for a short time as a graduate Quantity Surveyor for a private practice in London before joining the BAA procurement team. After that she joined Bellway Homes Thames Gateway South as Quantity Surveyor and now works as Commercial Manager for Simon Wright Homes.

The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors is trying to address the deficit of females in construction.  Kerry has proved to be a role model for other women wishing to join the industry.

Yorkshire Evening Post – A Crushing Blow… but Sean lines up whole new career.

Following a major accident at his workplace, Sean Foster had minimal use in his right arm. To help his rehabilitation, his wife bought him a sketch book, paints and pencils. He started sketching images from the news. Backed by his family, Sean went on to graduate from Leeds Met with a degree in Art and Design. His work is now hanging in a local gallery.

Leeds Guide – Crazy about Chocolate?

Paul Young, a chef trained at Leeds Met, is enjoying international success after opening a chocalte store in Islington, London. Further Paul A. Young’s Fine Chocolates stores will be opening in London, New York and Leeds.

He is the only chocolatier in the UK to make truffles from garlic, marmite and guiness.

Yorkshire Evening Post – Graduate Pair come up with peach of idea.

Business Studies graduate David Charlton, along with friend Tom Platt, has come up with healthy eating food delivery scheme to promote a healthier work environment. Already 44 businesses in Leeds have signed up for their daily delivery of fresh fruit.

The company, called Fruitlift and established in February this year, targets employees needs. The pair stress the importance of happy employees to business. David says, ‘Promoting a healthy work environment is essential to business in Leeds to keep employees happy, motivated and well.’

The scheme is unique in this country, although similar schemes are
Run in Australia.

He is a modern day explorer who was travelled the glocbe pursuing his taste for adventure. Leeds Met Graduate Ben Thackwray modestly describes himself as an ‘ultra distance runner, mountaineer and adventurer’. And his list of exploits reads like something from a Hollywood film script.

Yorkshire Evening Post – The Running Man (…and mountaineer…and skier…and now rower…)

Alumnus Ben Thackwray, is making a name for himself as an explorer and adventurer. Having just returned from Alaska where he climbed the highest mountain in North America – Denali (Mt Mckinley) he is now raising money for his plans with Simon Chalk to break the world record for rowing across the Atlantic.

Ben, who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in just two days, has further plans for 2008 to trek 340 miles across Greenland alone and on foot with only a sled for his food and equipment. In 2009 he will try to complete an ‘adventure trilogy’ by climbing Mount Everest; skiing to the South Pole and rowing across the Atlantic (again).

He explains, “I would hate to look back on my life and know that I could have done the things I wanted to but never made the effort.”

The Telegraph and Argus - Women realise shop dream

Three Yorkshire businesswomen are fulfilling their dream by opening a shop selling vintage hand-made accessories.

Two of the women, Emma and Helen, met while they were both studying for Art Degrees at Leeds Metropolitan University. They make bags from recycled materials such as sari’s and suspenders and Fran the third of the trio handcrafts beaded jewellery and felt scarves.

Their vintage hand made accessories shop will be the first shop in a boutique of five opening on the Railway Road in Ilkley.

Academy Internet wins small company of the year

Brighton based Academy Internet has won the prestigious npower business Impact on Society Award for Small Companies in recognition of its commitment to responsible business practice.

The award was presented to Jason Woodford, Managing Director by HRH The Prince of Wales at Business in the Community’s Awards for Excellence ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall.

Founded in 2002, the agency employs 23 staff and is on track to become one of the largest multi-service digital service agencies by 2010, based on its current annual growth rate.

Leeds Met Alumnus, Jason Woodford who is the owner and Managing Director of Academy Internet received his BA Hons Economics and Public Policy in 1996.

IBN - CAPGEMINI launches BPO initiatives in North America

Capgemini, one of the world’s foremost providers of Consulting, Technology and Outsourcing services, announced that Deputy Global BPO Leader David Poole has been appointed to lead the Capgemini Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) North America organization.

Leeds Met Alumnus, David Poole received BA honours in European Studies in Finance and Accounting in 1986.

Before joining Capgemini, Poole was a partner and founding member of the Global BPO business unit at PricewaterhouseCoopers in London. He also maintains his current role as Deputy Global BPO leader. Poole is a regular speaker on Business Process Outsourcing issues and a recognized strategic thinker in this field.

Sport the Independent – MBE award announced to Dee Caffari after her solo global trip

On 16th June, it was announced that Dee Caffari has been awarded an MBE for her services to sailing.

In an E-mail conversation, Dee said she was delighted and stunned and would be looking forward to visiting the palace to collect her award from the Queen later this year. An inspirational answer from her was that ‘I am tough and I am determined when spirits are low’.

‘The round-the-world yachtswoman’ sails Aviva Ocean, and also harbours an ambition to ‘swap my foul-weather gear for a pretty frock’ and star in ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.

Friends of a popular Westoning footballer David Rogers, who died after running the London Marathon, gathered in his memory at a charity soccer tournament on 16th June.

Mohamed Al-Daradji who graduated with an MA in Film & Moving Image Production in 2006 will show his film Ahlaam (Dreams) the Cannes Film Festival this month.

Ahlaam was the Iraqi nomination for the Oscars in the foreign film category earlier this year.

Bd - The Architects’ Website – My first job

A Leeds Met alumnus is putting his postgraduate diploma in landscape architecture to good use in his first job at Whitelaw Turkington in Wakefield. Andy Sinclair graduated from Leeds Met in 2002. Having worked on a variety of projects including prestigious garden designs, big open squares and city centre masterplans, Andy states that he is ‘currently working on a large mixed-use development in Dublin comprising public open spaces and semiprivate courtyard spaces.’

Telegraph & Argus – ‘Old Master’ Louis gets a PhD at the age of 86

Louis Wilde has just received a PhD at the age of 86 from Leeds Metropolitan University. He is one of the oldest in the country to achieve a doctorate.

Louis who retired as principal of Halifax College of Art in 1986 commented; “It was another mountain to climb, but I wanted to climb it. You have to keep pushing yourself and challenging yourself through life.”

Harrogate Advertiser – Prize-winner joins law firm

The winner of the Berwin’s Commercial Law Prize at Leeds Met has become the new trainee in the Harrogate firm’s commercial department. Caroline Acton won the prize whilst studying for a graduate diploma in law at Leeds Met in 2005. Managing partner Mr. Berwin said ‘Caroline was an outstanding student – hence her winning the Berwin’s prize – so you cannot come better commended than that. We are delighted that she has been able to join us.

Zara Goodwin, who obtained a degree in tourism management from Leeds Met in 2006, has recently been appointed to the post of marketing co-ordinator by Pudsey-based traditional and fibrous plasterers Ornate Interiors. Zara has joined the firm as part of a Business Link recruitment scheme which provides opportunities for marketing graduates.

Yorkshire Evening Post – I sailed in round the world race . . . now I’m running it!

Leeds Met Alumnus Joff Bailey who came third in the Clipper 05-06 round-the-world yacht race has been given the job of Director of the race.

Joff, who graduated with a BEng first class honours in Electronic & Electrical Engineering in 1996 became a professional sailor in 2002 and now teaches sailing.

Manchester Evening News – Great oaks from little acorns grow

Thirty-five year old, Deborah Oakley from Stacksteads, Rossendale has just started a unique landscaping business, ‘Quercus Design’, which combines landscape design with building and planting.

Deborah who graduated in 2000 with BA (Hons) Landscape Architecture won a gold medal at the 2006 Royal Horticultural Flower Show at Tatton Park. She already runs one successful domestic garden design business, ‘The Art of Gardening’, in Hebden Bridge.

The Cumberland News – Our voice for health in Europe

Leeds Met alumna, Nicola Bedlington has recently been appointed executive director of the European Patients’ Forum. Nicola, who graduated with BA (Hons) Business Studies in 1988 started her successful career in disabled politics after working as a placement student with the British Deaf Association in Leeds. After leaving Leeds Met she worked for the European Union for the Deaf. After her move to Brussels, she met her husband and her career snowballed. Nicola now lives in Geneva with her family working from an office which is next door to the European Parliament.

Showcasing the talents of the designers behind the Daily Mail Ideal Home Show’s unique Concept Products Exhibition which included an entry by a Leeds Met graduate from the 2006 BA (Hons) Design course. Waseem Mubarik's prototype ‘Hangman’ is one of thirty up for public vote. The winner will be announced on 21 March 2007.

Business Link News - Luminary Solutions

Leeds Met alumnus, Neil Warnock has won a top National Business Award for his company, Luminary Solutions. The National Training Awards celebrate individuals, business and organisations which have achieved outstanding success through training and development. Neil Warnock graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University with a HND computer studies. Neil came back to Leeds Met’s to enlist the support of the Business Incubator in 2003, winning ‘Incubator Business of the Year Awards’ a year later.

Yorkshire Evening Post – They still have their feet firmly on the ground

Leeds Met Alumnus Ricky Wilson, frontman of the Kaiser Chiefs returned to Leeds and played a special surprise gig at eeds Met’s Student Union. Ricky, who graduated from Leeds Met in 2000 with a first class degree in Graphic Art & Design, along with the band, went on a sentimental journey around their home town whist in Leeds, footage of which will be used for a new TV documentary.

BBC News - Fitness experts aid ocean race

Alumna Dee Caffari has teamed up with Leeds Met to work on shaping her into 'the ultimate Sailor. Dee will be working with Leeds Met fitness experts to go from 'Zero to Open 60' competitor - skippering a boat designed to be as fast and light as possible. Dee will be returning to Leeds Met Headingley Campus, where she graduated in 1995 with a degree in Human Movement Studies. Experts will be monitoring her physical and mental performance during a specially-designed training programme. Dee commented, "The guys at Leeds Met are putting a professional fitness programme together, which I know will help give me the edge over many of my rivals."

Yorkshire evening Post - An iconic photo - in a new light

Contemporary fine artist and alumna, Sadie Murdoch, who studied both her BA and PhD in the Faculty of Arts & Design will have her work exhibited at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds from March 3. Sadie produced a replica of the iconic photograph Chaise Longue, by using artificial colour and make up the to make her colour picture look identical to the black and white original.

Yorkshire Evening Post- College puts focus on business enterprise

Letterbox Media, a video production company run by two Leeds Met graduates of Graphic Art and Design was one of the first businesses to win a pod in The Unit - a new business enterprise centre in Leeds, based at Park Lane College. Tom Robinson and Tom Lockwood were some of the first people to pitch for a pod in a Dragon’s Den style competition. Tom Robinson commented “Now we’re here we can focus more so that productivity goes up – it’s so easy to get distracted at home.”

Yorkshire Evening Post- Goodbye Mrs Chips

In a career spanning five decades, Leeds Met alumna and head teacher Rhoda Wallace has seen her school established as one of the best in the land. Whilst studying for her teaching degree at Leeds Met Carnegie, Rhoda carried out her teaching practice at Whinmoor St Paul’s CofE Primary in Leeds in her final year. She then became a teacher there in 1969 after completing the course and went on to progress to the post of headteacher at the school. She reflects, 37 years later, on life and success at the school and how it really is seen as “the centre of the community”.

Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph- ‘Secret Weapon’ of coaches on mission

Alumna Amy Liddle, who graduated in Sport and Exercise Science at Leeds Met, has been given the groundbreaking task of turning North Lincolnshire youngsters to sport through a secret weapon - a mobile skate park. In the North Lincolnshire Street Sport Scheme, coach Amy, along with fellow coach Bernard Legair will tour ‘hot-spots’ for anti social behaviour in the evenings and weekends to convince under 18s to take up sport. Former student Amy said: “I’m really looking forward to my new role and making a real difference to kids’ lives”

PrintWeek- Kippax sponsors new screen award

Alumnus Paul Kelly, a graduate from Leeds Met in Graphic Art & Design, has become the first winner of the Kippax Outstanding Design for Screen Printing award. Paul investigated how to use the qualities of the screen printing process to enhance creative ideas. His work has already prompted a gold award in the D&AD ‘New Blood’ exhibition in June.

icHuddersfield - Artists with big ideas

Two Yorkshire artists are hoping to change the course of contemporary art with a Huddersfield exhibition. Wayne Markwort, who makes one half of the duo graduated from Leeds Met in 1997 with a degree in Fine Art. As a stone carver, Markwort will work with artist John Coombes and stage an exhibition at Bates Mill featuring sculpture, paintings in oils, film presentations and large installation pieces. Markwort has created several public works including ‘Shieldman’, a 4m tall figure in stone and steel situated in Sheffield and public sculptures in Belgium, Mexico and Luxembourg.

Yorkshire Evening Post - debut film could be up for an Oscar

Oscar glory could be ahead for Leeds Met graduate Mohamed Al Daradji whose debut film details life in strife-torn Iraq. Ahlaam has been chosen by the Iraqi government as its nomination for the Best Foreign Film section of the Academy Awards which are to be held in Hollywood. The films main character, Ahlaam, is confined to a mental hospital after witnessing the violent arrest of her opposition activist fiancé; the fates that later follow for Ahlaam mirror the turmoil gripping Iraq, while highlighting the fact that the country’s hope lies with its people.

Yorkshire Post - Train1on1 as it teams up with ProZone group

Leeds Met alumnus Richard Caldwell who started the business Train1on1 earlier this year to enable football coaches to market themselves to clients has teamed up with sports analysis company ProZone. Mr Caldwell, who graduated with a degree in Sports Science and has a masters degree in Business, established contacts which led to the partnership with ProZone during his period as a student. It was from this experience he “really saw how good a product they have and how it can be beneficial for coaches”. Mr Caldwell is pleased with the start the business has made. The business has coaches all around the world including Singapore, USA and Australia, signing up as members.

BBC News- E-degree graduates ‘first in UK’

Five students are thought to be the first in the UK to graduate with an online foundation degree. The Business and Management part-time course is taught entirely online over three years by Leeds Met and Bournemouth University. The course is set on a virtual campus which allows students to work at their own pace and from anywhere in the world.

Yorkshire Post Today- PR winners take pride of place

Leeds Met graduate, Lindsay Ramsay has won an award at The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) PRide Awards 2006 for Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, held at the Queens hotel in Leeds. A record number of the regions public relations experts gathered to celebrate the industry’s top achievers which attracted 171 entries. Unlike the other entries, entrants for the Young Communicators Award were interviewed by the regional panel and Lindsay, of Green Communications, Wakefield who studied Public Relations at Leeds Met was named Young Communicator of the Year in this category.

Yorkshire Evening Post- She’s on a roll!

British and European Champion of Squirt Kayaking and Leeds Met Alumna Claire O’Hara hopes to add a world title to a list of accolades. Claire was top woman at the recent kayak freestyle trials at Nottingham, and will represent Great Britain at the world championships in Canada next year. Claire earned a BA Honours degree in Sports and Recreation Development and continues to have links with Leeds Met through the Alumni programme, being awarded a Carnegie Sports Scholarship in recognition of her talents.

The Guardian - The Lines of Beauty

Alumna Laurel Truscott, 26, who graduated with first class honours from Leeds Met has been commissioned by Newham Council in the Thames Gateway project to come up with a masterplan to restore the Royal Victoria Gardens area, once a Victorian Pleasure Gardens to its former glory. Truscott is a landscape architect with the top London firm LDA Design. Only three years out of university she sees landscape architecture as a “way of life, a way of looking at the physical world”; it is hoped that with Truscott working on the project that the current state of the area under commission is set to change.

Leeds Met alumnus Joff Bailey skippered his yacht 'New York Clipper' 35,000 miles over 10 months in the Clipper 05-06 Round the World yacht race securing 3rd place overall.

Joff studied BEng (Hons) Engineering, securing first class honours in 1996, he went on to working at Barnbow tank factory before training to become a professional skipper.

Yorkshire Evening Post – Joff on crest of a wave after yacht wins Jersey Stage.

Electrical Engineering alumnus, Joff Bailey sailed his crew to win the 11th of 13 stages of the Clipper 05/06 round the world yacht race after crossing the finish line in his yacht New York.

This puts Joff and his team within reach of third place in the overall competition which will finish next week in Liverpool after ten months at sea.

The Guardian - Hearts and flowers

Leeds Met Fine Art Alumni, Green Gartside, has released a new album, ‘White Bread,’ produced under the Scritti Politti name that brought him fame over 20 years ago.

The album is his first work in seven years and revisits every stage of his four decades in music. ‘White Bread,’ is a solo album, which Gartside produced in his own house in Hackney.

Elle - New Brit talent

3D Design Alumnus Kieron Bakewell, who decided to branch out in his own venture last year and open a furniture design company ‘Naughtone’, has been highlighted as a new British talent by stylish Elle Magazine.

Kieron, who along with business partner Mark Hammond, have made it their design mission to: “Get people to appreciate the craft element of furniture.”

Elle named products within the companies’ portfolio, such as: “An offbeat ‘plus’ storage unit, and ‘Portion,’ a slinky-legged upholstered seat that can be configured as a sofa armchair or chaise longue.”

BA Product Design alumni Chris and Andy Vernall, joint owners of ‘Vitamin,’ a homewares collection launched last September, have been highlighted as a new British talent by stylish Elle magazine.

When asked why they decided to branch out, the brothers who already own the company V2, replied: “It’s fun, we want to design things that appeal to how people actually live – so many of our products revolve around laziness.”

Elle names star products within the brother’s company portfolio such as ‘Spruce’ the lamp that doubles up as a carpet sweeper, and ‘Tab A’ an ashtray topped with a vase.

Vitamin’s design mission is to: “Transform all those products that are normally stuffed into cupboards to create a life less ordinary.”

London Evening Standard - The truth about food

Leeds Met alumna, Catherine Collins, chief dietician at St George’s Hospital, Tooting, has been giving advice in the national press following a sting of conflicting advice of ‘so called nutrition experts.’

Catherine, who graduated in Dietetics in 1984, has been a hospital dietician for 23 years. She is one of only 6000 dieticians registered with the British Dietetic Association, the only legally recognised graduate qualification in nutrition and diet in the UK.

Catherine believes the real professionals are the qualified dieticians. She states the mixed messages portrayed to the public through programmes such as Gillian McKeith’s ‘You are what you eat,’ don’t always help consumers make the right choices when it comes to their diet: “Gillian McKeith’s interpretations of a lot of nutritional issues are her unique interpretations - which don’t bear any relevance to conventional science about nutrition; many of her ideas may be more based on current knowledge than scientifically sound evidence. “

The Guardian - Survival tactics

Nattylyn Jeffers is an exceptional survivor, after suffering a chaotic childhood at the hands of her mother and violent stepfather, at age six she was taken into care. She stayed with the same family until 18, but suffered another ordeal, and relations were sometimes difficult.

After a period in psychotherapy, she came out fighting, and launched herself into education completing a degree in Childhood Studies at Leeds Met.

Today Nattylyn has joined a tiny 1% of care leavers who gain a degree. Nattylyn believes: “I found help, but it was a huge battle.”

The Stoke on Trent Sentinel Series - Planning a perfect landscape

David Taylor, Leeds met alumnus in town planning, believes the poor professional image which has caused a shortage within the industry is a misconception made by graduates looking for a career they consider to be more exciting.

David believes his work, as a chartered town planner, is varied and interesting. “I thought town planners were just local authority planners, but a degree in town planning opens up so many avenues. You could work with for hotel chains or breweries or with railway companies. There’s more to it than people think.”

As companies and councils endeavour to become greener, David’s skills are being called upon more and more.

Yorkshire Evening Post - Prize moment as volunteers are honoured

Community Action at Leeds Met (Calm) has been honoured at a star studded awards ceremony in London, which recognises the activities organised for Community Service Volunteers (CSV) ‘Make a Difference Day’.

Calm received runner up in the ‘Most Heart-Warming Activity,’ category, after organising a Halloween party in a women’s refuge for young families who were victims of domestic abuse.

Volunteer activities co-ordinator, and Leeds Met Alumna, Lisa Jakimiciw, said: “The award means a lot to us, it’s really good recognition.” The prize money will be used to organise a similar event in the future.

Leeds Met graduate, Daniel Foster, has been short listed for the Capella Business Awards, which recognises start up businesses less than 18 months old in the Kirklees and Calderdale area.

His idea, ‘Bears by Mail,’ encourages consumers to forget sending flowers in the post and instead send fur! Since the company was formed thousands of cuddly teddy bears have been making their way through the worlds postal systems to happy recipients.

Viv Edmonds, who helped to draw up the nominations, said: “One of the best qualities of this company is its customer service approach, which is second to none.”

Isle of Mann Today - Joined up thinking for construction Industry

The new general secretary of The Isle of Man Employers’ Federation, Louise Furniss, believes more joined up thinking, and people working together is what the construction industry needs to ensure its sustainability.

Leeds Met alumna, Louise studied for a degree in Environmental Health, whilst also working for a large multinational construction company.

The federation is working closely with the Department of Trade and Industry to promote the services of companies offering a genuine and fair service. Louise will also contribute to the Independent Review of Construction, which details the importance and impact the construction industry has on the islands economy.

Teeside Evening Gazette - Louise steps out on new career track

Law alumni Louise White has made the decision to radically alter her successful Law career in order to pursue one of her favourite pastimes – Shoes!

Louise graduated from Leeds Met in 1999, before joining a Leeds solicitors firm who sponsored her through Law School. Once qualified the same firm took her on as a trainee solicitor. She spent two years rotating through different departments before becoming a commercial lawyer for two and a half years.

After getting ‘itchy feet,’ the decision to open her own shoe and bag shop was inspired when a commercial property became available on Stokesley High Street in August 2005.

Today Louise says she loves her job: “Studying law and being a solicitor was a fantastic grounding for me and has really helped me set up my own business.”

Report in The Eagles e-newsletter March 2006

Andrew Bridge, graduated from Leeds Met with a Sports and Exercise degree in 2001. He is now in his fourth season with the Newcastle Eagles, one of the country’s top professional basketball teams, after completing his 14th year playing basketball.

Andrew, who played for the Leeds Met Basketball team whilst he was studying, played a key role in England’s basketball journey through the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. He contributed nine points in the second quarter which gave England the bronze medal for the games.

Hydraulics and Pneumatics - New director appointment at DCA

Julian Lee has joined the Board of Directors at DCA Ltd. The company believe his seven years of hard work within the company, along with the knowledge he has gained, will help steer DCA forward in the future.

After completing a B.Eng (Hons) Degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Leeds Met, Julian has worked for companies such as, Honda Manufacturing UK, as a staff engineer specialising in robotics, and Prestige Pool Floors, where he acted as the MD’s assistant.

Evening Gazette - A revolution for retailing

Budding entrepreneur Ben Kenyon believes he has the answer to the problems of hard-hit high street retailers. He has devised a scheme, using 360fusion, which allows people to get to the shops – without leaving their home, giving shops, bars, restaurants and individuals a unique presence on the web.

Ben began the business after completing a Multi-Media technology degree at Leeds Met. To showcase the business he has created a tour of Yarm High Street, allowing customers the opportunity to interact, and purchase within the retail units throughout the site.

Harrogate Advertiser - Events centre hosts new show for parents - and their babies

The Yorkshire Events Centre in Harrogate is the venue for “The Bambino Show” beginning March 2006.

Founder Hungarian born Krisztina Horner swapped life as an au pair to study for an Events Management degree at Leeds Met, before launching her own company ‘Ottimo Events Limited,’ in January 2005.

She is now set to launch the first baby consumer products event this year. The event is the only one of its kind in Yorkshire dedicated to mums and mums to be.

Kieron Bakewell’s quirky X-Shaped cabinets have become one of the most sought after new furniture products. The Leeds Met 3D Design graduate has been lucky enough to work with the prestigious designer Robin Day as a guide and mentor. Day originally created the Polyprop stacking chair, selling more than 14 million worldwide.

It is a testimony to Kieron’s design talent that he can count Day, such an iconic figure, as a friend

Scarborough artists, Kane Cunningham and Andrew Cheetham are using art to document the death of the town's fishing industry. They are using disused fish sheds on Scarborough's Fish Pier as studios and art galleries.

Leeds Met Art & Design alumnus Kane is now the Head of Art & Design at Yorkshire Coast College . His son is studying Graphic Art and Design at Leeds Met.

Grimsby Evening Telegraph - Inside world of the Hollywood stars

Leeds Met Public Relations alumna Dawn Miller has become one of the first female presidents of the prestigious Levine Communications’ in Los Angeles. Dawn, who also writes a column in ‘Entertainment Today,’ called ‘The Hollywood Insider,’ said, “ I am extremely proud of the position I am in. The access you get to the stars and celebrities is amazing at times. It’s really interesting to see how things come across behind the camera.”

Founded in 1983, Levine Communications has an annual turnover $1 million. Dawn joined in June 2003 as a PR director and in less then three years has been handed the control of the PR Company.

Yorkshire Evening Post - Mum’s the word for new venture

Leeds Met Alumnia Krisztina Horner is about to give birth to her first major event. The Hungarian born, Events Management graduate, launched her company Ottimo Events (meaning ‘Excellent’ in Italian) in January 2005 and in March 2006 will be promoting The Bambino Show – “a one stop shop for bump, baby and beyond.”

Krisztina came to the UK in 1997 and began a trainee events management role at the Cedar Court Hotel in Harrogate. This provided her with the inspiration to study for her degree at Leeds Met. She then went on to work as an events co-ordinator at York Racecourse.

She said: “Inspiration for the new business came after I was asked to help a pregnant friend on a shopping trip. After carrying out market research, I launched my events business and started planning my first show.”
